Calculating your HOMA-IR score is straightforward if you have two specific lab values: your fasting glucose and fasting insulin. While you can always use our HOMA-IR calculator, knowing the formula is useful.
The Formula
The standard formula used globally (when glucose is in mg/dL) is:
HOMA-IR = (Fasting Glucose mg/dL × Fasting Insulin μU/mL) / 405
If your lab reports glucose in mmol/L (standard in the UK, Canada, Australia), the formula changes slightly:
HOMA-IR = (Glucose mmol/L × Insulin μU/mL) / 22.5
Step-by-Step Example
Let's say your lab results are as follows:
- Fasting Glucose: 95 mg/dL
- Fasting Insulin: 12 μU/mL
Calculation:
- Multiply 95 by 12 = 1140
- Divide 1140 by 405 = 2.81
Your HOMA-IR score would be 2.81. According to standard HOMA-IR reference ranges, a score of 2.81 indicates insulin resistance.
